One Decision Will Change Your Life

One Decision Will Change Your Life

In the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy Moses instructs the people of God to make a decision to "choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:" (Deut.30:19) Joshua, the predecessor of Moses told the people of God to "choose you this day whom ye will serve:" (Joshua 24:15)

Life is filled with choices and decisions to make each day; some are easy no brainers and other's are pressing, heart wrenching...just plain difficult. However, one fact holds true in that it only takes one decision to change your life forever. Whether it be for good or for bad, for better or for worse, our decisions we make daily help frame the life we live and the lives of those closest to us.

One of the greatest decisions I ever made was March 1, 1998 when I came to myself and realized I could no longer fight my alcoholism alone, and I cried out to God for help. That decision changed my life forever in that, in spite of the life I'd lived God was faithful to His word. David said, "this poor man cried, and the Lord heard him,and saved him out of all his troubles." Psalm 34:6

Like King David, I had fallen short time and again, yet when I made a decision to cry unto the Lord He saved me and set me in a new place. He saved me, healed, delivered, and restored me, all of which changed not only me but the lives of everyone around me. Setting me on the path and course of my appointed destiny.

3 Tips For Making Right Decisions

  • Make sure your decision is in line with God's Word...God's Word is God's will for our life. Therefore we must make His Word the final authority in our life and in every decision we make. Ask your self, "Does my decision line up with what God says ?" If it does then it's the right decision, if not then you'll need to re-think things and search God's Word for instruction.

  • Follow your heart...David said in Psalm 119:11 "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." To sin is to miss the mark, make the wrong decision, therefore we must put the Word of God in our heart then follow after what we know to be truth, in order to lead us down the right path.

  • Do not second guess your decision...James the apostle said, "a double minded man is unstable in all his ways. (James 1:8) Once you know that your decision lines up with God's Word, you are following what you know to be truth, then don't go back and forth questioning your self. This is being double minded, make your decision and stand upon it. The enemy will attack you in your double mindedness because it makes you vulnerable, it will bring about fear and fear tolerated is faith contaminated.

I want to encourage you today to put the seed of God's Word into your life and allow Him to lead you and direct you in your every endeavor. You may say, "Well, I don't know God let alone His Word." Well, that it's very simple too...just pray this simple prayer, "Lord Jesus, forgive me of my sins, come into my heart, and from this day forward be Lord of my life". (Romans 10:9-13)

If you've said that simple prayer from your heart today, then you've made the greatest decision you'll ever make and your life has now been changed forever.

Understanding The Necessity For Change

Understanding The Necessity For Change

Life as each of us know today is filled with ups and downs, good times and bad times, happiness and heartaches. Life is full of changes, therefore it is imperative that we as a people understand the necessity for change. It's my belief that change is a part of God's plan for our lives for this allows Him the opportunity to mold us and make us into the vessel He has chosen for us to be.

The bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1 "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:" We must get the revelation that nothing just happens, in fact Romans 8:28 Say's "And we know that all things work together for good for them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose."

God works in every situation to develop us into the person He has purposed and called us to be, even though in times it seems as if God is a million miles away. This is where we need to change our mindset and begin to see things from a different perspective. The apostle Paul wrote that we are to be "not conformed to this world: but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 The word "transformed" simply means "changed", so change begins in our mind or mindset. Our ability to adapt is critical in our lives today because all of our lives are fast paced, stressful, and our plates are continually being filled. The question is "How do we learn to deal with change?"

3 Keys To Understanding The Necessity For Change

  • Perception...In John's gospel Jesus prepares His disciples for change by telling them, "it is expedient for you that I go away:" John 16:7 He was telling them it was profitable for them if He left because He would send the Holy Spirit, who would empower them to do the things He said they would do. Why did He do this? He was trying to get them to see that the change that was about to take place was for their good. Our perception of how we see change will determine how we adapt to it.

  • Attitude...Our attitude toward change most commonly will determine our perception of it and whether we will resist it or embrace it. It will either work for us or against us, it will elevate us or bring us down. Someone once said, "Our attitude most always determines our altitude." The children of Israel are a good example of a bad or a wrong attitude which ultimately caused them to miss out on the blessings of God. (Exodus 14:10-12; 16:2-4) Job however is a great example of what having the right attitude toward change can do, for after he endured all his trials the bible says "the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than the beginning." Job 42:12

  • Perseverance...The bible teaches us the David, a man after God's own heart, went through many changes in his life, but yet he held on to the promises of God. Even when everyone else had left him and turned on him, "David encouraged himself in the Lord his God." 1 Samuel 30:6 He kept moving in the process, refusing to give up or give in. Many times we miss out on the blessings of God because of our unwillingness to persevere. The apostle James taught that if we let patience have her perfect work we will be complete and wanting nothing. James 1:3-4

Many times we fail to see the necessity for change, however I encourage you today to take a step back and look at change from a different perspective. Try to see how it will help and not harm you. Keep an attitude of faith and persevere to the end, it will be worth it. Allow God to turn your obstacles into opportunities and your stumbling blocks into stepping stones for He is able to use every situation for your good and His glory.

Making Time For One Another

Making Time For One Another

Just recently I lost my only sister to a long battle with lung disease and it has brought to light the shortness of life. The bible say's that "Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away." James 4:14...NASB

That pretty much say's it all in that we are here for only a brief matter of time. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone, at any time we could be called home. So I've said all that to say this today, that even though our lives are fast paced and we all seem to be running a hundred miles per hour, let each of us make the time to share some time with one another.

I encourage you today to set aside a moment to call that loved one or friend just to say "I love you". Our words are the most powerful force we can generate, therefore it is imperative to speak words of blessing to one another and over one another's life. Send someone a card or an e-mail, perhaps you're connected on a social network such as Facebook or Twitter, if so write on their wall something encouraging and uplifting.

Why?

These simple gestures shows others that they are important to us. Jesus said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another." John 10:34...NASB

People cannot benefit from love we don't give, therefore make time for one another, let them know what they mean to you and give them love in some form or fashion. For truly life is too short not to make time for the ones we love the most.

Be blessed and in all you're getting give God the glory!

Faith For Adverse Times

Faith For Adverse Times

In the hour we live each of us are finding ourselves in the midst of adverse times. Whether it's the losing of a loved one, which I just experienced in the passing of my only sister on mother's day, financial struggles or the dealing with a child who is battling addictions, it seems as if adversity is no respecter of person. I have found that it is in these times that try our faith and test our character not only as believer's but as a person as well.

The bible teaches us in James 1:2-4 to "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." NASB

I don't know about you, but I find it hard to consider a trial joy, however I've come to understand that trials, adverse times have a purpose in that it is in these times the Lord uses to develop us in Him. Romans 5:3-5 says "knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." NASB

We must have the revelation that when we get down to nothing, God is up to something. Everything God does or allows has a purpose, therefore we must have faith in Him to pull us through each situation. Many times we feel as if we don't have enough faith to get through situations, but I want to encourage you today and tell you that since we were created in God's image we possess the same amount of faith that Jesus did to die on the cross and believe the Father would raise Him again.

Did you know it is faith which causes God to move or to cause our situation to change? God does not respond to our need but He responds to our faith. So in spite of what's going on around us we must walk by what we know rather than what we see. So how do we increase our faith for adverse times? Romans 10:17 says "So then faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God."KJV

When we are down we must declare that according to the word of God "we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us." Rom.8:37; When we are sick we must proclaim "with His stripes we are healed." Isa.53:5; and when the enemy is set out against us we must bold confess in the name of Jesus "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; " Isa 54:17

The speaking of God's word releases our faith for victory over every situation, for His word is alive, it will not return void but rather accomplish that which it was purposed to do. Stand on God's holy promises today friends irregardless of what things look like and you'll be able to have faith for adverse times.

By The Grace Of God

Romans 5:8..."But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

My Story

Born the youngest of 5 in 1966 in the rural community of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky I lived what many would say "a simple life." Dad and Mom worked everyday, my Mammaw took care of me and everyone knew everyone. Unlike today, we had fans in the widows, with one telephone and we never locked our front doors. And the amazing thing is that we never knew we were poor, we just thought that everyone ate soup beans, cornbread and taters alot because we liked them ! All in all I wouldn't trade my upbringing for anything, because I know now that even though times may have been tough, I've gone through everything I have to get right where I'm at today.

Life took and sudden turn by the time I turned eight years old in that my parents divorced, which was devastating to me in that I never heard them argue or anything that would lead me to believe there were ever any problems in their marriage and our home. So we sold the house, moved across town and it was then that I began having problems with my left leg, even to the point of not being able to walk at times. Mom was directed to a life long friend whose father was a Shriner and he got me into the Shiner's hospital where it was determined the ball in the socket of my left hip was decaying and I would need to wear braces on my legs. These braces were steel with a steel bar between my legs, keeping them 32 inces apart.I remember after being home schooled for about month my mother decided to let me go to school and that first day how everyone followed me around like I had just been let out of a spaceship or something. But I'm sure they didn't understand what was wrong with me, although I never saw myself as being handicapped. Needless to say I kept my braces tore up a lot because I refused to be limited or tied down.

After having my braces on for 18 months I was completely healed and restored back to being your normal 10 year old. On top of that I looked up one day and my Dad and Mom had gotten remarried, almost fairy tale like isn't? I wish it was because it was short lived in that my father had been diagnosed with ALS a.k.a. "Lou Gerhig's Disease." He suffered quitely as his muscles detereriated, and by the summer of 1979, one month before my 13th birthday he went home to be with the Lord. I kind of always felt as if I lost my father twice, even though I wouldn't have had him back the way he. I know heaven is a better place with him there.

We weren't a church going family, in fact the only times I went to church was if the neighbors took me, or my uncle's family. I don't recall ever going to church with my mother and father although my father received Christ before he died. Yet, by 1980 I was a teenager needing direction, needing to fill that void that is present in everyones life without Christ. So I went to see David Wilkerson (The Cross And The Switchblade) along with Dallas Holm and Praise (Rise Again) at the Montgomery County High School. It was like every song and every word was being spoken to me and at the end of the service I gave my heart to the Lord, receiving Christ as my savior.

At that time in my life I felt the call of God on my life to preach the gospel and to pastor His church. The Word of God became alive to me and I could quote it, preach it, like a house of fire. But I didn't want to be a preacher because being from a musically inclined family I had picked up the guitar, therefore I wanted to be a rock-n-roll star! So not being rooted and grounded in church, I walked away from God to follow my plans and my dreams.

By the age of 15 I was playing night clubs, and beginning to live the life of sex, drugs and rock-n-roll. I grew up fast, living in the fast lane and running from the call of God on my life. I married at 18, became a dad at 19 and divorced at 20. I didn't know how to be a husband or father, and I lost that which was precious to a rebelious lifestyle. Remarried at 23, became a dad again at 24 and turned 25 in rehab.

I spent 31 days in a 21 day rehab only to get out and relaspe time and again. Trying to return to God for a quick fix of the mess my addictions made of my life only to go back out and do it all again. Still pursuing my dreams of becoming a star, God did open some doors for me and I did have some measure of success in 1996 and 1997. Going to Nashville, recording and having talks with labels about recording deals. I actually thought I was going to make it, and so I partied all the more. Causing another marriage to fail, leaving another child to be raise without a father in his life.

At the age of 32 I was back home living with my mother, everything I owned I could fit into my car. Sounds like a superstar if there ever was one doesn't it? I wanted to move to Nashville and write songs, just get away from all of my past and start again. But on March 1st 1998 my life changed forever, when I was pulled over for a DUI and placed in jail. I'll never forget that night because I had my 7 year old son for visitation and he was at my mother's waiting for me to come home that night. But I was locked up in jail and he was left to wonder where I was. I was let out around 10:30 a.m. that morning and when I got home I'll never forget the look on his little face or the words that he said when he asked, "daddy where have you been." For the first time I saw how my life was affecting everyone around me, how my addictions had now begun to hurt the ones I love the most.

Once by myself I had to examine where I was in my life, and I didn't like the man I saw in the mirror. I remember I didn't even weigh 120 lbs. soaking wet, my eyes had dark circles and pretty much I felt as if I was dying. So what did I do? I called on the Lord once again, but unlike times past there was a sincerety in my cry that I hadn't heard since I was a little boy. I said, "Lord, I can't do this anymore...I need you to take this from me."

It was at that moment that I found the same Jesus I had met when I was a teenage boy and instantaneously delivered me from all my addictions. He didn't condemn, but rather wrapped His arms around me and for the first time in a long time I knew what real love was. So I surrendered, placed my life in His hands and little by little He began to reconcile and repair the brokeness in my life. The first thing that happened was my first wife, Sandy, my first love, walked back into my life and we remarried after 13 years of being divorce. Next, God opened the doors for ministry where I accepted the call to pastor. After a brief interim pastorate my wife and I planted Mt. Sterling Covenant Church in 2003 where we completed that season of work in 2008.

Today I serve as an associate pastor and music minister at the Lighthouse Church of God in Winchester, Ky and do volunteer work at the Shepherd's Shelter / Ross Rehab here in Mt. Sterling. We are patiently waiting on our next assignment from the Lord, willing to be the vessel for Him to use to change the lives of others. I know today beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is still in the saving, healing and restoring business, for I am living proof as the life I live today I live "By The Grace Of God."
